Basics
The Demon Born/The Demon Blooded (Those of the Realm Below)
“And the demons crawled from the lowest depths to the greatest heights, and they proclaimed themselves gods of all things.”
The world below goes by many names: the place of demons, the void, the hells, the underworld, the abyss, and many more. It is a place of no form. Within the abyss, there is thought, emotion, and a spiritual existence that is ineffable.
It is only when demons come to the main world that they take form. In many ways, they are less powerful here than they are in their natural world, but by gaining a body and an existence in the main world, they are afforded many other opportunities as well. Some of the most powerful demons of the abyss cannot enter the world; some because of magics preventing them from doing so, while others cannot or will not sacrifice the energy it would take to bring them here. (It is easiest to send minor demons to the physical world). Some demons, however, can effect the physical world even though they are beyond it, through possessions or dreams. Some humans (particularly summoners) can hear the faint whispers that demons speak in mortal’s ears.
Demons' powers and forms vary greatly. New demons can ascend to the world between from the abyss. This is not uncommon since, if they can conquer the world between, they can directly attack the celestial heavens. As an added bonus, it weakens the celestials as they have fewer 'good' things to draw strength from. Demons that ascend to the world between frequently have a short lifespan, as they are killed before they get their bearings and learn who is an enemy and who is a friend. Once in the physical world, demon spawn are typically created by the demon breeding with another creature. Demons can also be born when physical demons breed with other demons.
The demonic derive their strength from all negative emotions, but each is specifically attuned to a single vice by which their characteristics most directly follow. Demons often manifest this trait in extreme versions of the vice, which typically get more intense with age. Should this happen, they run the risk of going mad which although sometimes hampers their situation; it more often leads to becoming more unpredictable, and therefore makes the demon’s enemies more cautious. Demons thrive on chaos.
For every ten demons there is but one celestial, yet the battle is
nonetheless even. Demons fight among themselves and slay other powerful demons as they vie for authority. This keeps their population down, and the vast majority of the Demon Born weak in comparison to Celestial Born, but they are ruthless in their tactics and find ways to twist the Celestials’ virtues against them, driving them to madness, failure, or death.
Demons vary in form and appearance, looking similar (but not
identical) to their parents, but very different from others of their kind. Their traits are often related to their vice.
